Eldgjá

These paintings are based on photos taken at Eldgjá in Iceland. I've made good use of my rock texture brush again and also one I've made for grass. I painted the daylight version first, then made the night lighting version from that, adjusting the colours and values and replacing the sky with a photo I took of backlit clouds.

Rockscape

I threw together a basic composition from five or six different landscape photos, then started painting over it. Much of this was done by using Photoshop's lasso tool and then painting within selections - it has quite a graphic style to it, which I like.

Pinnacle

Satellite

I created this after playing around at making some custom brushes in photoshop - they're an extremely powerful feature. Having a cloud brush is great - used here for the smoke trail

Twll Du

Twll Du (The Devil's Kitchen) is a narrow pass through the mountains high above the hanging valley Cwm Idwal in Snowdonia. This image is a combination of photos and painting in Photoshop. I wanted to create an eerie, slightly sinister feeling that, for me, this remote place evokes.

The Ridge

Here, I've painted over a photo of the roche moutonnee (glacial rock formation) that lies in the Nant Ffrancon valley (Snowdonia). I made up the background mountains and extended much of the foreground rock, aiming for a dynamic composition. Done quickly in Photoshop - a couple of hours max.

Clogwyn Mawr

Clogwyn Mawr is an outcrop of rock at the foot of Snowdon along the Llanberis Pass. The composition of this image is made up of a few photos I took around there when I went camping in Snowdonia last year. The Snowdon-esque peak in the background is just painted in - in reality it towers way above above this. The image is a combination of photos and painting done in Photoshop.

The Hermit

This is based on St Govan's Chapel in Pembrokeshire, painted from memory a few years after going there. In reality it's not as dramatic as this, but still a really unique place. Done in Photoshop in less then 2 hours.

Guilin Landscape

This image is based on a photo of a popular view across the Li River in the Guilin area of China. The region has the most amazing limestone pyrammidal peaks and lush vegetation. Although this is quite close to the original photo reference, I've altered the composition to a 2.35:1 ratio with the vanishing point placed on the right-side third and been pretty liberal with the mountain peaks in the background. The concept sketches were done in Corel Painter using mainly pencils, markers and chalks. The final image was completed in Photoshop using some rock texture reference from various photos. This is my first venture into digital painting.
